So... I had a thought today... If God is everywhere all the time... why do I ask Him in my prayers to come and meet me, or us- if I'm praying for the group?
God is Omnipresent- Omni "all", present "here" He is already here.
Psalm 139: 7
"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast."
Alright, so God is everywhere all the time. This would mean He is there when I sleep, when I drive, when I tinkle, and so on... this would also mean that He is present during war, during murder, during rape, during all that is destructive. Is He even present in Hell? If He wasn't, this would limit God and take away any validation of the scriptures that He could be anywhere at any time. However, if He was present in Hell why would He let the very people He loves and has created stay in this place of torment?
See why I'm struggling with this?
In one of the books I'm reading the author states that God is present in different ways in different places... sometimes he is present to punish (Amos 9:1-4), sometimes he is present to sustain (Col. 1:17), and sometimes he is present to bless (Ps. 16:11). I have never thought of this in such a way.
Wayne Grudem writes:
"Some examples of the usual biblical means of expression are as follows: 2 Cor. 3:17: "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom"' Romans 8:9-10: "you are in the Spirit, if in fact the spirit of God dwells in you... if Christ is in you... your spirit is alive"' John 14:23: "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him," and so forth. All of these verses talk about God's presence and assume that we understand that they mean God's presence to bless.
In a parallel kind of expression, when the Bible talks about God being "far away" it usually means he is "not present to bless." For example, Isaiah 59:2 says, "Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God," and Proverbs 15:29 declares: "The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous." In summary, God is present in every part of space with his whole being, yet God acts differently in different places. Furthermore, when the Bible speaks of God's presence, it usually means his presence to bless, and it is only normal for our own speech to conform to this biblical usage (Pg. 177, Systematic Theology)."
If I look at this past week alone, I have been in many places- some places probably would not "look right" to a fellow believer driven by the truth and laws alone.... On the contrary I have actively participated in gatherings where love was so full that the truth got left out. If I am sitting at a party full of people in love with the world, or singing praises in church He is there. How is His presence being revealed in those very places though? That is the question.
What I should really be praying is, "Lord, let me see you and appreciate you here in this place. Lord, how may I join you here?"
