New Orleans

“They gave the hurricane the name of a nice pretty young lady…” These are the words of a song echoed by a Slovak Blues artist. I sat in an old theater house listening to a cluster of Slovak ensembles perform. The reason?…. A New Orleans benefit show. All donations went to help the victims in New Orleans. I fully expected to look around and see the place filled with Americans. To my amazement the only Americans I saw were the ones I came with.

It seems odd… receiving help from others. Slovakia- a small little country with not much economic recognition. Although ideas differ as to what sorts of things are necessities, they still came together to put on a show to help others in need. Artists composed new pieces, played old songs, and gathered together to help out the victims of this “far away land”… the land of Blues…. Because no matter who we are, no matter where we are, we are all still people… some with greater needs than others… it just depends on your perspective.

Hey pal,

Thanks for sharing your heart. I really resonate with what you wrote and wish we could've made it. Our prior plans just didn't allow it. Thanks for the invitation though!

I also am floored by the generosity of the different nations; though I suppose after disaster after disaster afflict different parts of the world, ppl realize it's a global issue.

It remains to be seen how long the hospitality of our own citizens towards each other lasts.
